FAQ
Q: Should I cut my t-shirts before I send them?
A: Preferably, no. The only reason for this is that if you cut it too small, it could make the shirt unusable for the quilt. If you concerned with the weight of the box, and the shipping cost, then you can cut the shirts on the seams the separates the front and the back of the shirt. Send the side you want to be used in the quilt. If you have any questions please be sure to contact us before you cut!
If your shirts are already cut, we can still likely make something work. Please note that pre-cut shirts often create much more work in the piecing process and therefore are subject to additional charge.
Q: Can you use clothing other than t-shirts in my quilt? Can you use other items in my quilt?
A: Sure! If you have a specific dress shirt, pair of jeans, jersey or something else, we can likely use that item in the quilt. You should probably only include machine washable items in your quilt, in order to make laundering it easier. For example, a silk tie wouldn’t be optimal for many reasons. Please contact us with specifics so we can work it out.
Q: What about t-shirts with photo transfers on them?
If the photo transfer is screen printed or some other permanent form of transfer that is fine. If the photo transfers are something you did with craft store supplies and your iron, I probably will not take on this quilt. I’ve worked with photo transfers before and they are so delicate, I feel that it’s too much of a liability. Sorry!
Q: Should I wash my t-shirts before I send them to you?
A: Yes, you should wash and dry all shirts and any other items you are sending. As with any quilt, all materials should be washed and dried before use so that the materials have the opportunity to shrink before being quilted. If you do not wash and dry your shirts before they are incorporated into the quilt, then when the quilt is washed and dried it can cause problems.
Q: Is it ok if my shirts have some imperfections?
A: Yes, within reason. Small rips or tears are fine, as long as the shirt is not shredded. We can probably patch or mend holes and incorporate the shirt into the quilt. Stains do not create a problem in creation of the quilt, but the stain will be visible in the quilt. As long as you are comfortable with the stain, we can work with the shirt. In our humble opinion, imperfections give a quilt character and help tell the story!
Q: What materials do you use in your quilts?
A: We use 100% cotton thread, fabric and batting. More specifically, we use Warm and Natural or Warm and White batting. This batting is a favorite for us and many other quilters because of it’s durability and warmth.
Q: What is the difference between machine quilting and tying? Which is better?
A: Machine quilting is when your quilt is completely quilted. Machine quilting adds some visual interest, but more importantly it creates a very durable quilt. Machine quilted quilts hold up for years and can be thrown in the washing machine and dryer without issue.
A tied quilt is where you quilt top is literally tied to the back of the quilt. It is done by hand and you will have small knots on the top of the quilt. While tying is a widely used practice, it is not nearly as durable as machine quilting. If your quilt is for display or will get little use, tying is a viable option. But, if you anticipate your quilt getting heavy use or being laundered frequently, we highly recommend the machine quilted option.

Q: How do I care for my quilt?
A: Because all of Swamp Quilt’s quilts are made with only 100% cotton materials, they are machine washable. Wash in cold water on a delicate cycle with your regular detergent (no bleach!!) and dry for approximately 20-30 minutes. We like to keep a close eye on our quilts when they are drying, as we feel it’s probably better to have the quilt in the dryer as short a time as possible. You can also opt to air dry your quilt, but it won’t be quite as soft.
Q: Can I order a quilt that does not fit the specifications on the Order page?
A: Absolutely! Contact us with your specifics and we can work out all of the details. Our order page contains only guidelines, but realistically, all quilts are unique and different!
Q: How long will my quilt take?
A: Currently, we will be able to turn your quilt around in approximately 1 month. During busier times of the year, this time will likely increase. Depending upon our other orders and your order specifications, this time may increase or decrease. We will let you know upon receipt of your order or contact us for more info before you order.
Q: If I need my quilt in a rush, can you decrease the turn-around time?
A: Sure! If you need your quilt in a rush let us know. Contact us to work out the details. Your order will be subject to a rush fee, but we will do all we can to meet your deadline!
Q: How does your referral program work?
A: We value you and we value your referral! If you refer a friend to Swamp Quilts they will receive 5% off their quilt, and you will receive 5% off your next quilt!
